Manta Mania 2018 Trip Report
Our fourth Manta Mania event brought divers and scientsts together to learn about Manta Rays, Sharks and Coral Reef Systems in a fun and social vacation package.
This year we had four presenting scientists specializing in marine mammals, deep sea corals, long term coral reef monitoring… and of course, manta rays!
This event is where we get to dive and learn from scientists who are on the front lines of marine conservation.
In classroom style workshops and evening media presentations at the open air bar, we learn about the lives of mantas and sharks, about human impact on the marine environment and what we can do to reduce it, about “twilight zone” research and how coral reef systems respond to sea temperatures and climate-related events.
This year we learned about the benefits of re-breather diving and how scientists use this equipment. Dr. Sonia Rowley specializes in deep sea corals and research in what’s called the “twilight zone”, 50 to 150 meters / 150 to 400 feet depths.
The event package is filled with three tank days, Mandarinfish, night and a shark feed dive.
Mating season brought the year’s best nature show in Yap, dancing mantas!
Manta rays were identified at 7 different dive sites, including the outer reef, along with the typical cleaning station encounters.
A new resident manta was identified during the week demonstrating good reproduction for our rays several years in a row.
Next Year’s event is February 9th – 16th!
It’s diving, it’s science, it’s conservation… and it’s a party, complete with a private beach bbq and special traditional bamboo stick dance put on by the family at Manta Ray Bay Resort on our private beach.
Our best big animal dive package happens during manta ray mating season where we observe multiple behaviors and interact with multiple animals on dives – get in on one of our hottest packages!
